In Miami Beach, Dr. Thompson has been a
member of the Law Enforcement Review, the Social Services
Committee, the Community Health and Cultural Arts Committee, the
Miami Beach Council on Crime and Safety, the Lincoln Road
Management and Development Board, and the Community Relations
Board. Dr. Thompson was also a founding member of the Community
Action Committee – working towards better ethics in City
government. Currently, and for many years, he has served as the
Protestant Chaplin for the Miami Beach Police Department and was
honored for his work with the Community Service Award for the
Miami Beach Police Department in April of 1996.
Dr. Thompson served twice as President of the Rotary Club of
Miami Beach and has served on its Board of Directors for nearly 30
years. He is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International – a
testament to his service and financial support. He is currently
Secretary of the Rotary Club of Hollywood.
Honored and Loved by Parishioners
In the larger community Dr. Thompson was the founding President
of the Counsel Ministry of South Florida, organized in 1982, and
has served on the Board for most of the years since. He served
for many years as a panel member of the United Way, Charter Member
of the Inner City Marine Project, and founding member of the
Clergy Coalition for Social Justice, formed in 2000.
Dr. Thompson is loved and respected by his parishioners for his
excellent pastoral care, his challenging and interesting sermons
which have been featured in the Distinctive American Sermons
anthology. He is also loved and respected in the community for
his helpful and caring ways and faithful participation and
leadership in its organizations.
Awards
On April 30, 2004, Dr. Thompson received the Chalice award from
the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ. This is
essentially a Pastor of the Year award except it is for the two
years of the Biennium.
In 2004, Dr. Thompson was asked to be the Coordinator of the
Oversight Team for Church Development in the State of Florida.
Also, he was asked to coordinate the training of our Florida
churches for the “God is Still Speaking” campaign of the
denomination.
In 2006, Dr. Thompson was named Citizen of the Year by the
Miami New Times.
